AM General LLC originated as the Standard Wheel Company, when they began producing motor vehicles in 1903. They developed the first 4-wheel-drive tactical utility truck for the U.S. military in 1940. They continued to expand within the industry when, in 1960, the company started making half-ton delivery vans for the U.S. Postal Service. Later, they began producing "Dispatcher" vehicles for police departments, utility companies, small package delivery companies, and, primarily, the U.S. Postal Service. AM General continued to expand their product line and, in 1992, introduced the now-famous HUMMER. Today, with over 100 years in the industry, AM General continues to grow and adapt to the needs of its commercial and military vehicle customers. The international sales of HMMWVs continue to grow as the company continues to modernize its military and workforce fleet.
