Processed gravel products are sized and sorted to specific gradations for their intended application. Transferring gravel between equipment multiple times or stockpiling it in conditions that allow fines to migrate into the coarse fraction can degrade the gradation before it ever reaches the job site, creating a product that does not perform as specified.

Pit run gravel extracted from active gravel pits contains natural moisture that varies significantly depending on recent weather, pit depth, and extraction location within the deposit. A load of pit run gravel taken from a low, wet area of the pit can weigh substantially more than the same volume taken from a dry, elevated area. That variability makes consistent weight management on pit run loads a real challenge that requires scale verification rather than fill-level estimation.

Active gravel pits are located in rural areas where the access roads are unpaved and subject to seasonal deterioration. Spring thaw conditions turn gravel pit access roads into soft, rutted surfaces that loaded trucks sink into and sometimes cannot exit without assistance. Summer dry conditions create dust problems that obscure visibility on one-lane access roads shared by loaded outbound trucks and empty inbound ones.

Road maintenance and base gravel operations require precise discharge placement that puts the material exactly where the grading crew needs it. An end-dump that unloads a foot off the planned grade line creates regrading work that slows the crew. A live-bottom trailer spreading base gravel at the wrong speed creates uneven application depth that affects compaction performance. Discharge precision matters more on gravel road projects than it does on bulk fill operations.

Gravel distributors who supply multiple gradations from the same facility sometimes need to haul mixed loads with different products separated in the same trailer. Improperly cleaned trailers carrying remnant fines from a previous load can contaminate a fresh load of processed pea gravel or clean drainage stone. That contamination may not be visible at delivery but will show up in field performance testing on drainage or filtration applications where clean aggregate is required.

Road base and surface gravel projects consume material at rates that require consistent truck cycling throughout the workday. A grading crew spreading and compacting base gravel cannot wait between trucks without losing compaction momentum. Managing truck cycle times to match the crew's consumption rate requires dispatch coordination that accounts for haul distance, loading time, and discharge time at every stage of the operation.
