Sand holds more moisture by weight than almost any other aggregate product. Dry sand and saturated sand of the same volume can differ by 15 to 25 percent in total weight, and that difference is enough to push a legal load well into overweight territory after a rain event. A load of concrete sand filled to the same depth as yesterday's dry load will fail the scale today if the stockpile absorbed significant rainfall overnight. Weight management on sand loads cannot rely on visual fill level or yesterday's numbers.

Wet sand behaves more like a fluid than a granular solid under vibration. Road vibration during transit causes wet sand to redistribute within the trailer, shifting weight toward the rear and potentially causing a trailer handling condition that affects the truck's stability at highway speed. End-dump trailers carrying wet sand also present a slope stability risk during discharge. A saturated sand load that does not discharge cleanly can cause the trailer to tip if the center of gravity shifts during the dump cycle.

Industrial silica sand and fine concrete sand generate respirable silica dust during handling and loading. While dust exposure is primarily an occupational health concern during loading operations, fine silica particles also become airborne from open loads at highway speed, creating both a regulatory compliance issue and an air quality concern along the haul route. Silica-bearing sand loads require tarping and in some jurisdictions, additional dust suppression measures before the truck enters the road network.

Concrete sand and masonry sand are produced to specific gradation curves that affect the workability and strength of the concrete or mortar they are mixed into. A concrete producer who receives a sand load with too many fines or too coarse a gradation has to adjust mix designs to compensate, which adds time and cost to production. Verifying that the sand being loaded matches the specification before the truck leaves the supply facility prevents downstream production problems that trace back to the delivery.

High-purity silica sand for glass manufacturing, filter sand for water treatment, and specialty sports sands for turf applications all have strict purity and gradation specifications that can be compromised by trailer contamination from previous loads. A trailer that carried construction fill sand and was not cleaned before being loaded with filter sand creates a contamination event that the water treatment facility will reject on delivery. Specialty sand loads require clean, verified trailers before loading.

Ready-mix concrete plants go through substantial volumes of concrete sand daily, and any gap in supply slows or shuts down the plant. Managing consistent sand delivery to a high-volume batch plant requires coordinated truck scheduling that accounts for loading time at the sand facility, haul distance, and discharge time at the plant. That coordination has to be active throughout the day because production rates change based on order volume.
