Ceramic and porcelain tile is dense. A standard pallet of large-format porcelain tile can weigh 2,500 to 4,000 pounds depending on tile thickness and pallet configuration. A full truckload of tile pallets reaches legal gross vehicle weight before the trailer deck is physically loaded to capacity. Shippers who count pallets rather than confirm total weight send overloaded trucks to the scale house on a routine basis, and tile pallets do not look nearly as heavy as they actually are until the scale confirms otherwise.

Tile is manufactured in production runs that produce subtle color, shade, and texture variations between batches. Professional tile installers sort and blend tiles from multiple boxes within the same lot to achieve a visually uniform installation. When tiles from different production lots are mixed in a single delivery, the variation between lots is visible across the installed floor or wall surface, and the only correction is removal and replacement of the affected tiles. Maintaining production lot integrity from the warehouse through to the job site delivery requires documentation and load management discipline at every handling stage.

Large-format porcelain panels in sizes from 24x48 to 48x96 inches and larger have become increasingly common in commercial and high-end residential applications. These panels are thin relative to their face area, which makes them prone to flexural cracking during transport if they are not supported across their full face area during handling. A large-format panel that is picked up at two corners without full-face support will flex enough to crack along natural stress lines that are not visible in the panel before handling begins.

A significant portion of the ceramic and porcelain tile sold in the United States is imported from Italy, Spain, Brazil, and China. That import supply chain involves container shipments at port terminals where drayage coordination, container release scheduling, and warehouse receiving appointments all have to align correctly to move tile inventory efficiently from the port to the distribution warehouse. A drayage move that misses the container release window or arrives at the warehouse outside the receiving appointment creates per diem charges and receiving congestion that adds cost to every affected container.

Tile pallets are held together by banding and sometimes stretch wrap that maintains the stack integrity during handling and transport. Road vibration over a long haul can cause tile boxes within a pallet to shift if banding tension was insufficient at loading. A shifted tile box that contacts adjacent boxes creates the corner chip and face crack damage that tile distributors find when they break down pallet stacks for inventory. That damage is not recoverable and the affected tiles go to the waste bin regardless of how minor the shift appeared.

A large portion of tile moves to residential renovation projects and small commercial installations where the delivery site has no loading dock, limited staging area, and no forklift available for offloading. Individual homeowners and small flooring contractors who order tile for a bathroom renovation or a restaurant floor installation need delivery coordination that accounts for those site limitations without requiring them to arrange commercial offloading equipment for a few pallets of tile.
