Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) Transport/Shipping Services

CLT panels for commercial mass timber construction are manufactured in widths up to 10 feet and lengths up to 60 feet, with panel thicknesses ranging from 3-ply sections to 7-ply structural panels exceeding 10 inches in depth. Those dimensions push almost every CLT shipment into oversize permit territory before weight is even factored in. Width, length, and height all have to be evaluated for permit compliance in each state on the route, and those evaluations take time that needs to be built into the project delivery schedule.

CLT is a hygroscopic product. Panels exposed to rain or standing moisture during transport can absorb enough water to cause surface swelling, checking, or dimensional change at the edge banding and connection routing that affects fit-up at the joint locations. A panel that arrives wet and is immediately covered in the stack can develop fungal growth between panels before the building crew ever gets to that floor level. Moisture protection during transit is a structural and durability issue, not a cosmetic one.

CLT panels must be stacked flat on the trailer with dunnage spaced at intervals that prevent bending across the panel width. Inadequate dunnage spacing on long panels can cause permanent bow in the cross-direction that affects the panel's fit at the structural bearing points. Dunnage also has to be aligned vertically between stacked panels so load is transferred straight down through each layer rather than being carried as bending stress across the panel face.

By the time CLT panels leave the manufacturing facility, every window opening, door rough opening, and mechanical penetration has already been cut by CNC machinery to exact dimensions. The edges of those openings are exposed end grain that absorbs moisture, is vulnerable to impact damage, and can chip or check if the panel is handled with equipment that contacts those areas directly. A chipped or wet opening edge may require field remediation before the building envelope can be closed.

Mass timber erection is designed around just-in-time delivery because job site storage for large CLT panels requires significant staging area that most urban and suburban construction sites do not have. Panels arrive and go directly from the truck to the crane to the structure. That workflow demands delivery timing precision to the hour, coordinated with crane availability, erection crew readiness, and the structural sequence determined by the engineer of record.

Mass timber buildings are being constructed in urban infill sites, tight university campuses, and dense mixed-use corridors where the access logistics are genuinely challenging. A flatbed carrying 10-foot-wide CLT panels needs a clear path to the crane staging area, and that path does not always exist without coordination, temporary road closures, or load sequencing adjustments that have to be worked out before the truck leaves the plant.
