Floor trusses are engineered to carry distributed floor loads across their full span, not to be supported at random points during transport. Placing a truss on dunnage at the wrong location transfers concentrated load to the web members in ways the truss was never designed for. A truss that looks visually intact after an improper haul can have compromised chord connections that only fail once it is in service under a live load.

Floor trusses for commercial and multi-family projects regularly span 30 to 60 feet, and some long-span configurations exceed that. Loads extending beyond the rear of the trailer require rear overhang flags, lighting, and in many states, additional permits or escort vehicles depending on how far the load projects past the trailer end. Missing those requirements at a roadside inspection stops the truck entirely.

A single floor truss delivery often includes multiple truss types, standard floor trusses, girder trusses, and filler trusses of different depths, all destined for the same job site. Stacking mixed configurations without proper separation and blocking creates lateral pressure between trusses that can bend web members or knock connector plates loose during transit. Load organization on the trailer is not a convenience, it directly affects product condition at delivery.

Unlike commercial projects with wide staging areas, residential job site deliveries often involve narrow subdivision streets, overhead utility lines at low clearance, and no available space to turn a long flatbed around. A driver who misses the correct turn with a 50-foot load cannot simply reverse course the way a standard delivery vehicle can. Every residential delivery requires advance site review before the truck departs the truss plant.

Long-span floor truss loads that exceed legal length limits in the states being crossed require oversize permits, and each state processes those permits differently. Travel hour restrictions, escort car requirements, and route approval processes vary widely. A multi-state truss delivery without proper permit coverage can be stopped at the state line, adding days to a project schedule that had no buffer built in.

Framing crews work in a tight sequence. Floor trusses need to arrive after the bearing walls are ready and before the framing crew moves to the next phase. A delivery that shows up a day early with nowhere to store trusses on a tight lot creates a real problem. Arriving a day late pushes the framing crew off the job, which delays every trade working behind them.
