Structural Tubing Transport/Shipping Services

Structural tubing is almost always shipped in bundled form, and those bundles do not always stack cleanly. Square and rectangular HSS sections nest differently than round tubing, and mixed bundle orders with varying wall thicknesses create uneven weight distribution across the trailer deck. Getting the stacking sequence wrong at the yard means the load arrives with axle weight readings that do not match the permit, which creates problems at every weigh station along the route.

Structural tubing is commonly produced in 20-foot, 24-foot, and 40-foot lengths, with some mill orders running up to 65 feet for specific structural applications. Once a load crosses the legal length limit for the states involved, oversize permits are required, and those permits come with travel hour restrictions, pilot car mandates, and route approval requirements that vary significantly from one state to the next.

Many structural tubing orders are shipped with mill finish, primed, or coated surfaces that are spec-required for the end application. Bare metal binders, rough trailer decking contact, and improper blocking can all leave surface marks or coating damage that causes material rejection at the fabrication shop. A rejected load means the project stalls and the shipper absorbs the cost of re-delivery.

Heavy-wall structural tubing is dense. A full truckload of large-diameter, thick-wall HSS can approach or exceed legal gross vehicle weight limits before the trailer deck is even fully loaded. Without accurate pre-load weight calculations factoring in bundle count, wall thickness, and tubing profile, a load can roll into a weigh station overweight with no permit coverage to back it up.

Round structural tubing presents the same rolling hazard as steel pipe but in smaller diameter bundles that can shift in less predictable ways if the blocking setup is not right. A bundle that looks stable at the yard can work loose over a long haul if the cradles are not set at the right intervals and the binder tension is not checked after the first significant stretch of road.

Fabrication shops often have tight bay clearances and specific unloading windows that the truck has to hit precisely. Showing up outside that window, or arriving with a trailer configuration the site was not prepared for, backs up the entire shop schedule. Remote job site deliveries carry their own complications, including ground conditions, crane availability, and forklift access that have to be confirmed well before the truck departs.
