Rigid metal conduit and rigid PVC conduit have no flexibility to compensate for inadequate support during transport. A bundle of 10-foot rigid conduit sticks supported only at the ends will deflect at mid-span under its own weight over a long haul. That deflection causes permanent bending in rigid metal conduit and stress cracking in rigid PVC. Either outcome means the conduit cannot be installed as-delivered and requires field correction or replacement before the electrical crew can use it.

Rigid metal conduit arrives from the manufacturer with factory-applied coatings, galvanizing, or in the case of PVC-coated conduit, a bonded polymer exterior that provides the corrosion resistance required in harsh installation environments. The threaded ends are precision-cut to accept couplings and fittings without adjustment. Contact between conduit sticks during transit, abrasive binder placement, and rough handling at transfer points can damage both the coating and the thread profile, creating installation problems that show up when the electrician tries to make a coupling and finds it will not thread properly.

Large-diameter rigid steel conduit is heavy. Three-inch and four-inch rigid galvanized conduit in 10-foot sticks weighs significantly more per bundle than smaller trade sizes, and a full truckload of large-diameter rigid conduit can accumulate weight that approaches legal gross vehicle weight limits before the trailer is visually full. Stacking large-diameter conduit bundles without calculating the cumulative weight by trade size creates overweight loads that fail the scale house.

Rigid PVC electrical conduit is temperature-sensitive in both directions. In cold weather, PVC becomes brittle and is more susceptible to impact cracking during handling. In hot weather, PVC softens slightly and is more susceptible to deformation under the weight of other conduit or under improperly tensioned binder straps. Managing PVC conduit handling and securing practices for the temperature conditions during transport requires attention to seasonal variation that metal conduit does not demand.

Electrical contractors and supply distributors frequently order mixed conduit loads with multiple trade sizes and conduit types in the same delivery. EMT, IMC, and rigid steel conduit all have different wall thicknesses and weights at the same nominal trade size. Stacking heavier conduit types over lighter ones without separation creates crush damage on the lower product. Mixed trade size loads with different stick lengths create overhang situations that require flagging or permits depending on the length differential.

Conduit delivered to an active construction site needs to be staged in a location where it is accessible to the electrical crew without blocking other trades or getting damaged by site equipment. Rigid conduit stored directly on the ground without blocking absorbs moisture, and PVC conduit stored in direct sunlight on a hot job site can develop surface softening. Coordinating delivery placement with the electrical foreman before the truck arrives prevents storage problems that reduce the conduit's installation quality.
