PVC pipe wall thickness is sized for the pressure or load rating of the pipe, not for resisting concentrated lateral force from a binder strap applied at a single point on the pipe circumference. A binder placed directly on a PVC pipe bundle without a spreader bar or load distribution device concentrates the strap tension onto a small arc of pipe wall, which can crush the pipe cross-section below the out-of-round tolerance required for proper fitting and joint assembly. A pipe that looks fine in the bundle can fail pressure testing after installation because the binder damage was not visible at delivery.

Large-diameter PVC pipe in long sections is flexible enough to deflect measurably under its own weight if not adequately supported along its length during transport. That deflection is not always permanent, but repeated deflection cycles during a long haul combined with temperature cycling can cause the pipe to take a set that affects joint alignment during installation. Certain PVC pipe formulations, particularly thin-wall drainage pipe and agricultural irrigation pipe, are susceptible to surface degradation from prolonged ultraviolet exposure during open transport. A week-long cross-country haul on an open flatbed during summer can cause surface chalking and microcracking that reduces the pipe's impact resistance. For schedule 40 and heavier pressure pipe, the effect is less significant, but for thin-wall products, UV protection during long hauls is a legitimate product quality concern.

PVC pipe ships from the manufacturer in bundled form held together by plastic strapping. Those bundles go through multiple handling events between the manufacturer and the final job site, and each handling event is an opportunity for banding damage. A bundle that arrives at a supply yard with broken banding has loose pipe sections that create a handling hazard during inventory and a damaged product risk during any subsequent handling. Maintaining bundle integrity through every handling event in the distribution chain requires care at each transfer point.

Building material suppliers, plumbing wholesalers, and irrigation distributors frequently order mixed PVC pipe loads with multiple diameters, wall schedules, and lengths. Loading those mixed loads without proper separation and weight distribution creates several problems at once. Heavy-schedule large-diameter pipe stacked over light-schedule small-diameter pipe crushes the lower product. Mixed lengths create overhang situations that require flagging and sometimes permits depending on how far the longest sections extend beyond the trailer.

A significant portion of PVC pipe moves to residential properties, small plumbing jobs, and individual irrigation projects where the delivery site has no loading dock, no forklift, and limited space for a long trailer to maneuver.
