Metal-clad switchgear uses drawout circuit breaker and instrument transformer compartments that must align precisely with the bus stabs and secondary disconnects in the switchgear cubicle. That alignment is factory-set to tight tolerances. Shock and vibration during transport can shift the drawout components relative to their guides, creating misalignment that prevents proper engagement of the bus stabs when the breaker is racked into the connected position. A misaligned drawout component discovered during commissioning requires a factory service visit that delays energization.

Switchgear insulation systems rely on dry, clean dielectric conditions to maintain their voltage withstand capability. Moisture that enters a switchgear enclosure during transport, either through damaged gaskets, inadequate weatherproofing during an open haul, or condensation during temperature cycling in an unheated trailer, can reduce insulation resistance to the point where the equipment fails its pre-energization tests. Re-drying a moisture-compromised switchgear assembly is a time-consuming process that delays a project that was counting on energizing on a specific date.

Medium-voltage metal-clad switchgear lineups for industrial and utility applications can be 20 to 40 feet long and weigh 15,000 to 40,000 pounds depending on the number of breaker sections and the voltage class. Those dimensions frequently require oversize permits and specialized trailer configurations. Switchgear that ships as multiple sections requires coordinated delivery of all sections to the installation site to allow the lineup to be assembled and aligned before energization.

Most switchgear manufacturers specify that their equipment must be transported in the upright position it was designed to operate in. Tilting a switchgear assembly beyond the manufacturer's specified transport angle can displace internal components, damage bus connections, and in oil-insulated equipment, cause oil migration that compromises insulation. Verifying and maintaining transport orientation throughout the haul is a non-negotiable requirement on every switchgear load.

Switchgear is installed in electrical rooms, substations, and mechanical spaces that are often not directly accessible to a delivery truck. Moving a heavy switchgear section from the truck to the installation point frequently requires rigging through building openings, down equipment corridors, or across floors that have not been designed for concentrated rolling loads. That rigging path has to be planned and the required equipment staged before the delivery truck arrives.

Large switchgear lineups that ship as multiple sections must be delivered in the correct assembly sequence to allow the lineup to be built from one end to the other. Delivering sections out of sequence forces the installation crew to work around incorrectly positioned sections or move heavy switchgear within a tight electrical room, which is both difficult and risks damage to the equipment and the installation site.
