Copper begins oxidizing immediately on contact with air and moisture, and the oxidation pattern that develops during transport reflects the contact geometry of whatever touched the copper surface. A finger print from a bare hand leaves a permanent oxidation mark in the pattern of the finger ridges. A damp dunnage piece leaves a moisture oxidation pattern in the shape of the dunnage. A binder contact mark leaves an oxidation pattern at the strap width. Those marks are not removable without chemical treatment and in some cases abrasive refinishing that changes the surface texture of the copper. For architectural applications, uncontrolled patina initiation during transport creates an uneven initial appearance that is visible until the copper weathers uniformly, which can take years.

Copper is electrochemically noble relative to both carbon steel and aluminum, and galvanic corrosion initiates on the less noble metal at the contact point when moisture is present. While copper itself is not the corroding partner in steel-copper contact, the corrosion products from the steel contaminate the copper surface and create permanent staining that affects appearance in architectural applications. Copper in contact with aluminum creates galvanic corrosion on the aluminum, and for assemblies that combine copper and aluminum components, transport contact between the two materials creates a corrosion condition at the contact interface before installation is even complete.

Soft and half-hard temper copper sheet derives its formability characteristics from the controlled annealing history that the mill applied during production. Bending, folding, or distorting copper sheet during transport, even slightly, introduces work hardening at the deformed location that changes the local temper condition. For roofing copper that will be formed in the field using hand tools, a locally work-hardened area from a transport bending event cracks during forming at a stress level that the correctly tempered sheet would tolerate without failure.

Copper is a commodity metal with significant scrap value that makes copper sheet freight an attractive cargo theft target, particularly during periods of high copper market prices. A full truckload of copper sheet represents a material value that justifies specific load security attention beyond standard cargo insurance coverage. Route selection, delivery window confirmation, and driver check-in protocols all contribute to the security posture that high-value copper freight warrants.

Copper sheet in contact with itself during transit develops a contact oxidation pattern at the inter-layer boundary that is visible as a dull or darkened area on both sheet faces at the contact geometry. That contact marking is distinct from the overall patina that develops on exposed copper surfaces and creates an uneven initial appearance that architectural copper contractors find objectionable. Preventing inter-layer contact requires separation material that is compatible with copper, meaning it does not itself create a contact mark or transfer a chemical reaction product to the copper surface.

Copper sheet for standing seam and flat-lock roofing systems is produced in large-format sizes and coil widths that require careful handling to prevent the edge damage and surface distortion that create roofing installation problems. Large-format copper sheet that develops even minor edge distortion during transport creates a fit-up problem at the roofing seam that the sheet metal worker has to correct before installation can proceed.
