Steel sheet bundles stacked without adequate inter-layer separation develop abrasion marks on sheet faces from vibration-induced micro-movement between layers during transit. On cold-rolled and coated sheet products, that abrasion is visible as surface marring that fails incoming inspection at facilities with surface quality standards. The inter-layer movement that causes it is small enough that it is not perceptible during normal transit, which makes it easy to overlook until the bundle is broken down at the processing facility and the surface condition of individual sheets is examined.

Steel sheet bundles can be extremely heavy relative to their footprint. A bundle of heavy-gauge cold-rolled sheet in a standard mill pack configuration can weigh 10,000 to 20,000 pounds. Handling those bundles requires forklifts with adequate fork spread for the bundle width and lift capacity for the bundle weight, or overhead crane with magnetic or mechanical sheet handling attachments. A receiving facility whose handling equipment is not sized for the specific bundle weight and dimensions cannot offload the truck safely, creating a standby situation that resolves slowly.

Moisture that enters a steel sheet bundle during transport becomes trapped between sheet layers where it cannot evaporate. That trapped moisture causes surface rust that develops uniformly across the sheet face in the pattern of the sheet-to-sheet contact area, creating a corrosion pattern that is immediately obvious when the bundle is broken down. On cold-rolled and precision sheet products, rust contamination between layers is a complete rejection. The sheets cannot be cleaned to a usable surface condition for precision applications without material removal that changes the dimensional specification.

Steel sheet cut edges and slit edges are dimensional features that affect downstream processing performance. Edge damage from rough handling during transport, binder contact directly on sheet bundle edges, or impact at bundle corners creates edge irregularity that shows up as burrs, nicks, and dimensional deviation at the edge location. For stamped parts with tight edge-to-edge dimensional requirements and for roll-formed products where edge quality affects the forming die contact, incoming edge condition is a specification requirement that transport damage can violate.

Steel sheet in large-format sizes for structural and industrial applications can arrive in bundle dimensions that require specialized handling at both the loading and offloading points. Bundles that exceed standard forklift fork spread require crane handling or specialized sheet handling equipment. Large-format bundles that exceed standard pallet jack or forklift capacity at the receiving facility create offloading complications that have to be anticipated and addressed before the truck arrives.

Pre-painted steel sheet for roofing, cladding, and appliance applications arrives with factory-cured paint systems that have zero tolerance for abrasion, contact transfer, and impact damage during transport. A paint surface that is scratched during transport cannot be touched up in the field for exterior cladding or roofing applications without visible evidence of the repair. Pre-painted sheet requires handling and separation standards that exceed what bare steel sheet demands at every point in the transport process.
