Large-diameter HDPE pipe for water distribution and gas transmission applications is produced in standard lengths that commonly create rear overhang on standard trailer configurations. The fusion welding process is sensitive to surface contamination from oils, dust, and UV-degraded surface material that creates fusion bond defects at the weld interface. HDPE pipe and sheet that arrives at the installation or fabrication site with contaminated or UV-degraded surfaces requires additional surface preparation before fusion welding that adds time and cost to the installation program.

HDPE pipe for water utility and agricultural applications is installed at sites that are often rural, remote, or in active construction zones where delivery site access conditions are not designed for loaded flatbed trucks.
