Rigid PVC surfaces scratch more easily than most metals and many other plastic materials, and those scratches are visible on finished products in ways that affect sale value and installation acceptability. PVC trim board with a scratch is not installed on a visible exterior surface without the homeowner noticing. A PVC foam board sign blank with a surface mark requires the sign fabricator to work around the defect or waste the affected material. Surface protection on PVC products during transport is not a refinement for premium applications. It is the standard handling requirement across the entire PVC product category.

PVC becomes significantly more brittle at temperatures below approximately 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and its susceptibility to impact cracking increases as temperature decreases. A PVC product that would flex and recover from a handling impact at room temperature can fracture at the same impact energy in cold weather. For winter deliveries of rigid PVC sheet, trim board, and structural profiles, handling care at loading and offloading must be increased to reflect the material's reduced impact resistance in cold conditions. A PVC trim board broken at a corner during a cold-morning offload from rough handling is waste that neither the contractor nor the distributor planned for.

PVC has a high coefficient of thermal expansion that causes significant dimensional change between cold morning temperatures and hot afternoon conditions during summer transport. Rigid PVC sheet and trim board that is tightly constrained against thermal expansion during a hot-day haul can develop permanent bow that makes the product unusable in applications requiring dimensional flatness. For PVC window and door profiles where dimensional accuracy is a specification requirement for proper frame assembly, thermal distortion during a constrained summer haul creates assembly problems that the window manufacturer discovers when trying to cut and join the profiles.

PVC products for outdoor applications including fencing, trim board, and window profiles are manufactured with UV stabilizer packages that maintain color stability and impact resistance during service. UV stabilizer content is consumed by UV exposure, and PVC that is exposed to direct sunlight during open transport loses stabilizer from the exposed surface before installation. For white PVC products where color consistency is a selling point, UV-induced surface yellowing during transport creates a visible color deviation that the installer cannot explain to the property owner.

Extruded PVC profiles for window and door manufacturing, architectural trim systems, and industrial applications are produced to precise cross-section geometries that determine their fit in assembled systems. Profile distortion from improper blocking that applies load across the profile in the wrong direction, from thermal softening during a hot summer haul, or from impact at the profile ends creates cross-section geometry changes that affect fit in the mating assembly components. For window and door profiles where the cross-section geometry is the precision feature, profile distortion from transport handling creates manufacturing problems that the production line discovers when trying to join and assemble the profiles.

PVC product deliveries to building material distributors and fabrication operations frequently include multiple product forms including sheet, trim board, profiles, and fencing in the same load. Each product form has different cross-section geometry, surface sensitivity, and thermal behavior that affects how it should be loaded relative to other PVC products. Heavy rigid sheet panels against extruded profiles creates contact damage on the profiles. Thermally sensitive foam board adjacent to rigid sheet without separation can develop surface adhesion from heat-induced contact during a summer haul. Managing mixed PVC load compatibility requires product-form awareness that generic freight loading does not apply.
