Crushed limestone used as road base, drainage fill, or agricultural amendment is extremely dense in bulk form. A standard dump trailer can reach its legal weight limit with a relatively shallow load of crushed limestone because the material compacts during transit and packs far more pounds per cubic foot than most aggregate freight. State regulations in many jurisdictions require aggregate loads to be tarped or covered to prevent flyout, and failure to comply creates both a safety hazard and a roadside inspection violation that can pull the truck out of service at the worst possible time for a job site delivery.

Highway and road construction projects using limestone base aggregate operate on pour and paving schedules that require aggregate to arrive at a specific rate throughout the workday. A delivery that arrives too early clogs the staging area. One that arrives late stalls the compaction crew. Limestone aggregate deliveries for paving projects have to be scheduled around the production rate of the construction operation, not just the general delivery date.
