Polished marble surfaces scratch with considerably less force than granite. Vibration from road travel, contact with any abrasive material, and even the pressure of an improperly padded strap can leave marks on a honed or polished marble surface that require refinishing before the piece can be installed. On custom fabricated pieces, refinishing is often not practical, and the damage results in a replacement order rather than a repair.

Marble's distinctive veining is a product of its geological formation, and those veins are also natural planes of weakness in the stone's structure. A slab with heavy veining running perpendicular to its length is more likely to fracture along that vein line under bending stress than a uniformly structured slab would be. Understanding where those weak points are in a specific slab affects how it needs to be supported during loading and transit.

Like granite, polished marble slabs cannot be transported horizontally across long spans without risking fracture. Stone slabs are prone to breaking or cracking when moved horizontally, making vertical support using an A-frame the standard approach for slab transport. The A-frame configuration has to be matched to the slab bundle dimensions and total weight, and the straps have to be padded at every contact point with finished marble surfaces.

Premium marble slabs are predominantly sourced from quarries in Italy, Turkey, Greece, and Brazil, and most of that inventory enters the United States through container shipments at East and West Coast import terminals. Intermodal containers reduce the need for excessive handling and are ideal for global stone supply chains, with drayage carriers transporting the container to its next destination once it arrives. Coordinating drayage timing with container release windows at busy port terminals requires advance scheduling that cannot be left to the last minute.

Fabricated marble countertops, vanity tops, and custom architectural components represent the output of significant fabrication investment. A countertop with an undermount sink cutout or a thin waterfall edge is structurally vulnerable at those geometry transitions. Loading these pieces without internal support at the cutout locations or without edge protection at the thin sections creates fracture risk that no amount of strap tension can compensate for once the piece is on the road.

Marble typically arrives at high-end residential, hospitality, and commercial projects where the delivery expectations match the material value. Showing up outside a scheduled window, delivering without advance communication to the receiving crew, or arriving with a truck configuration that the site cannot accommodate creates problems that go well beyond a freight claim. These clients expect precision delivery and they notice when it does not happen.
