A single masonry material delivery might include CMU block, face brick, mortar bags, grout material, and masonry accessories in the same load. Each product has different stacking requirements, weight density, and moisture sensitivity. Stacking mortar bags under heavy CMU block creates a crushed product situation. Loading moisture-sensitive grout material on an open flatbed without weather protection creates a hardened, unusable product before it reaches the job site. Load compatibility across masonry product types is a genuine planning challenge.

Concrete masonry units and face brick are dense unit products that accumulate weight rapidly in truckload quantities. A standard CMU pallet typically weighs 2,000 to 3,000 pounds, and a full truckload of CMU reaches legal gross vehicle weight before the trailer deck is visually close to full. Shippers who load masonry pallets by count rather than confirmed weight routinely send overloaded trucks to the scale house without realizing it until the fine is issued.

Bagged mortar, grout, and masonry cement are highly vulnerable to moisture exposure during transport. A single rain event on an open flatbed carrying unprotected mortar bags can render the entire pallet unusable, as cementitious materials begin setting when they absorb water, even through bag seams. The financial loss from a full pallet of ruined mortar is significant, and the job site delay caused by a short material delivery is compounding.

Thin stone veneer and manufactured stone panel products are lightweight compared to structural masonry but are extremely fragile in transport. Individual veneer pieces are thin, have irregular edges, and break easily if pallets shift or if binder straps are positioned incorrectly across the top course. A pallet of veneer stone that tips during transit or receives lateral pressure from adjacent freight arrives with a breakage rate that makes the product unusable at the quantity the project required.

Commercial masonry job sites often have multiple masonry material deliveries arriving throughout the week from different suppliers. Staging area management, forklift availability, and pallet offloading sequencing all have to be coordinated in advance so that a heavy CMU delivery does not block access to the block saw or create a congestion problem that slows the masonry crew for the rest of the day.

Masonry specifications on commercial projects define exact product types, strengths, and dimensions for each application in the structure. Delivering the wrong CMU strength class, the wrong brick absorption rating, or a mortar type that does not match the spec creates a compliance problem that the project's special inspector will catch. Incorrect masonry materials that get installed before the error is identified have to be removed, which is expensive and time-consuming.
