Concrete pavers are among the densest unit masonry products in common distribution. A single standard pallet of 60mm concrete pavers can weigh 2,500 to 3,500 pounds depending on paver size and pallet configuration. A full truckload of paver pallets reaches legal gross vehicle weight long before the trailer deck is physically full. Shippers who load by visual deck utilization rather than confirmed weight end up overweight at the first scale without knowing why.

Paver pallets are held together by plastic or steel banding that prevents individual units from shifting during handling and transport. Road vibration, hard braking, and temperature cycling during a long haul can weaken banding over the course of a shipment. A pallet that arrives with broken banding has loose pavers that create a handling hazard at the delivery site and often result in chipped or cracked units that cannot be sold as first-quality product.

Hardscape contractors and landscape distributors frequently order multiple paver styles, colors, or sizes on a single delivery. Mixing paver types on the same pallet or stacking pallets from different production lots without clear identification creates color separation problems at the job site that can delay installation while the crew sorts material. Each pallet needs to arrive with its product identification intact and its lot separation maintained throughout the haul.

Flagstone, limestone, and other natural stone paving products have surface characteristics that make them more vulnerable to transit damage than manufactured concrete pavers. Pallet contact points, binder pressure on the top course, and moisture exposure during transit can all cause surface marking or staining on natural stone pavers that affects their appearance grade and salability at the distribution yard.

Paver pallets are heavy and require a forklift with adequate capacity to offload safely. Landscape contractor job sites and residential hardscape projects often do not have a forklift on site and rely on lift gate service for delivery. Lift gate offloading of full-weight paver pallets is slow, creates additional wear on the gate mechanism, and in some cases requires splitting full pallets into partial loads that the gate can handle safely.

For brittle stone materials susceptible to damage from contact with other freight, shipping full truckload is always preferable to LTL to keep stone products safe during transit. Paver pallets in LTL service get handled multiple times at cross-dock facilities, and each handling event is an opportunity for banding damage, corner chipping, or pallet contact with incompatible freight. First-quality pavers that go out as LTL frequently arrive as second-quality product.
