Aggregate is one of the densest freight categories on the road. Dense materials like crushed granite, trap rock, and recycled concrete aggregate reach legal gross vehicle weight limits at surprisingly shallow load depths. A driver who loads by visual fill level rather than confirmed scale weight sends an overweight truck down the road on nearly every run. Managing aggregate load weight requires scale verification at the loading site, not an estimate based on how full the bed looks.

Fine aggregate particles become airborne at highway speed if the load is not properly covered or contained. Most states require aggregate loads to be tarped, and failure to comply creates both a road safety hazard and an inspection violation. Beyond the regulatory issue, aggregate dust settling on adjacent vehicles creates liability exposure that carriers and shippers share equally when the load was not properly secured before departure.

Aggregate weight changes significantly with moisture content. A load of sand or fine gravel that was within legal weight limits at a dry quarry can gain hundreds or thousands of pounds after a rain event saturates the stockpile. Carriers who do not account for moisture conditions when calculating load weight end up with scale violations on wet weather days that never happen in dry conditions with the same nominal load.

Different aggregate types and applications require different trailer configurations. End-dump trailers, side-dump trailers, belly-dump trailers, and live-bottom trailers all serve different purposes depending on the material, the delivery site conditions, and the speed at which the aggregate needs to be discharged. Using the wrong equipment for the application slows the delivery and in some cases damages the receiving area or creates a material placement problem the site crew has to correct.

Aggregate delivery sites are not always set up for easy truck access and discharge. Active construction sites have soft ground, limited turning radius, and congestion from other equipment that makes maneuvering a loaded aggregate trailer genuinely difficult. A driver who cannot position the trailer correctly for a clean discharge ends up with a pile in the wrong location that the site crew has to move before work can continue.

Road construction, concrete batch plants, and large earthwork projects consume aggregate at rates that require continuous, coordinated delivery scheduling to maintain production. A gap in aggregate supply at a concrete batch plant shuts down the plant. A gap at a road paving operation means the paving crew and equipment sit idle. Keeping high-volume aggregate consumers supplied requires dispatch coordination that matches delivery frequency to consumption rate throughout the workday.
